This project is in itself a fairly quick and easy sewing project, suitable for the adventurous beginner with a regular domestic sewing machine.

No adventure without a few challenges, so keep the following points in mind:

  • The pattern and method is written from the point of view of (real or artificial) leather of medium thickness. Not too flimsy or stretchy, but not too firm either. As a rule of thumb, I recommend 1.5 to 2mm (4-5 oz.). Not only the thickness matters, but also the surface. The smoother, the easier the leather will transport under your sewing foot.

  • Are you working with our DIY kit with sturdy vegan leather? Then a decent domestic sewing machine will really suffice.

  • If you choose real leather, then 2 layers do require your sewing machine to have some horse power. You don't need a high-end machine, but I don't recommend a light beginner's sewing machine. Tip: Test your machine with 3 to 4 layers of sturdy jeans fabric. Can you get through that, with or without a little cranking your handwheel? Then chances are you'll be able to complete this project as well!

FAQ:

Q: Can you also use faux or cork leather to make this wallet?

A: In principle, all non-fraying materials can be used BUT

  • It depends on the type of faux or corkc leather. You need a certain thickness and especially a certain stiffness to achieve a nice end result.

  • Because of the construction, you work with unlined materials. The backing is visible. With cork leather this is usually not an issue, but the backing of faux leather is not always very beautiful. For our kits, we selected an artificial leather that works perfectly!

Q: Can you make the wallet in (cotton) fabric?

A: The method is intended for non-fraying, sturdy materials BUT

  • You can hack the pattern in a variety of ways. By doubling the pattern pieces from fabric, reinforcing and then turning them, you can definitely achieve a cool result with lighter materials too!

  • Be creative!
